Research 

 

Lars Mjøset is Professor of Sociology and Director of the Oslo Summer School for Comparative Social Science Studies at the Social Science Faculty, University of Oslo, Norway. He is also a member of the Norwegian Academy of Science.

Besides books in Norwegian (Norden dagen derpå, Oslo 1987, and Kontroverser i norsk sosiologi, 1991, he published The Irish Economy in a Comparative Institutional Perspective, Dublin 1992. He edited several volumes Comparative Social Research: Vol. 16 on methodology, Vol. 20 on military conscription, Vol. 24 on varieties of capitalism, and most recently Vol. 28 (2011) on Nordic varieties of capitalism.

His main areas of research are political economy, comparative historical sociology, and in particular studies of small open Western European economies. He has also published on concepts of theory in the social sciences and on the methodology of qualitative comparative research: “The contextualist approach to social science methodology”, in D.
